Southampton is the UK's number one vehicle handling port, Europe's leading turnaround cruise port and the UK's most productive container port. Operated by DP World Southampton, the terminal is home to the new 500m deepwater quay SCT5, which was purpose built to handle the biggest ships in the world.

The port is less than two miles from the M27 and has direct rail links to the main railway network for both freight and passenger trains. The Port of Southampton is served by Southampton International Airport, while Gatwick and Heathrow airports are within easy reach.

The Role

Reporting to the General Manager, Service Delivery the purpose of the role is to lead the Landside Operations team to successfully deliver and continually improve Port operations, landside, in the key areas of Safety, Quality, Service and Efficiency.

Accountabilities

  • Build and embed the new Port Operations Team. This will involve developing, motivating and training a diverse team in order for them to be able to fulfil their duties in line with customer and business expectations.
  • Lead the Port Operations and Stevedoring teams to successfully deliver in safety, quality, service and efficiency for the cruise business and other general Port activities. Also, identifying areas where safety, quality, service and efficiency can be improved, relating not just specifically to the landside operations but to the port operations as a whole.
  • Effectively lead and manage a 24/7 operation, ensuring suitable control mechanisms are in place to execute the plan in line with customer and business expectations and ensuring space within the port is used efficiently.
  • Act as an ambassador for the Beyond Zero safety campaign. Ensuring high levels of safe and healthy working standards are maintained at all times, and Health & Safety policies & procedures are adhered to. You will also be required to contribute to the management of the departmentís Risk Assessments and Safe Systems of Work.
  • Directly line manage a team of approx. 10 people. This will involve;
    • Providing coaching and mentoring to your team members.
    • Ensuring Continual Professional Development is maintained and training provided as necessary for the team.
    • Handling staff recruitment and conducting appraisals.
    • Carrying out disciplinary procedures where necessary.
    • Ensuring adequate cover of the operation is maintained.
    • Ensuring technology is used to maximise efficiency.
    • Ensuring compliance and adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Actively lead and develop the Port Operations team through inspirational leadership, ensuring employee engagement levels and team moral are maintained, as well as open & honest communication.
  • Proactively build effective relationships with key customers and work with them to influence the future ways of working within the industry. Installing techniques and ideas that embrace and enhance our customersí relationships and/or experiences.
  • Work closely with our commercial team in order to contribute towards the development of new business opportunities for the port, providing operational solutions to specific customer requirements.
  • Play an active role in the development and growth of the Operations Leadership Team.

Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Proven record of leading large operational teams and engendering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Able to demonstrate exceptional leadership skills.
  • Evidence of customer service excellence.
  • Can demonstrate an ability for understanding complex operations.
  • The ability to think creatively and innovatively.
  • Self-motivated, with excellent communication skills.
  • Ability and experience if working as part of a team and leading one.
  • Good working knowledge of Health & Safety requirements, with ability to produce, update and issue Safe Systems of Work and Risk Assessments as required. Ensuring compliance with H&S requirements and other relevant legislation.
  • Flexible with regards to working hours and duties.
  • Proven experience of working well under pressure.
  • Demonstration of capability to multi task and to make business decision.
  • Desire to progress and stretch oneself.
  • Experience of building a new team.
